Caboose No. 21292
Ongoing maintenance to be donated by the Dover & Rockaway River Railroad
Ongoing storage to be donated by Holland Manufacturing
Caboose No. 21292 was built in September of 1978 by the Fruit Growers Express (FGE) at their plant in Alexandria, Virginia. The car was originally Conrail No. 21292 (class N-21), and it saw service primarily on the Delmarva peninsula. The car was transferred to Norfolk Southern in 1999 and remained in local service out of Harrington, Delaware. It was eventually taken out of service for a rebuild that was not completed, and was transferred to Carload Express’s Delmarva Central Railroad when they took over the Norfolk Southern lines in Delaware in 2016.
In April of 2019, the Delmarva Central Railroad generously donated this historic caboose (in its full original Conrail paint job) to Operation Toy Train for additional volunteer capacity. Once it is moved to New Jersey, storage for the car throughout the year will be donated by the Dover & Rockaway River Railroad (DRRV) and the Holland Manufacturing Company of Succasunna, New Jersey.
Operation Toy Train is currently fundraising to restore the caboose and repaint it to its original Conrail paint scheme. Once restored, the car will be used on Operation Toy Train’s annual Toys for Tots collection trains for additional volunteer capacity.
